Aeromodelling

For those who like building from plans here's the  Bowers Fly Baby plan article  designed by Gordon Whitehead for 15 size motors and 4 function R/C originally published in the October 1974 Radio Modeller the plan is still available from  My Hobby Store

Also available is the  Druine Turbulent plan article  designed by Gordon Whitehead for 15 - 25 size motors and 4 function R/C originally published in the RCM&E February 2001 the plan is still available from  My Hobby Store

Mercury Matador

17th Nov 2011.   As part of the mass vintage build running on the RCM&E forum I've decided to build the Mercury Matador,  this will be 3ch electric.   Motor/esc combo curtesy of BRC hobbies an emax2822 with 20amp esc. 9gm servo's will be used and probably a 1300 or 2000 3s lipo.  Being my first electric build I'm hoping all goes well.

The engine bearers were fitted as per plan because they give the front end a bit of strength and serve to support the motor former.

Motor trial fit

The battery box takes my 3s 1300mah lipo easily with enough room to move about to adjust the CG and if extra weight is need up front I can get a 2000mah in. Removable cowl to do next I think.

Did a bit of work on the cowl today,  it will need filling and sanding but its coming along

Matador Matador

Bit more done on the matador today while her indoors was messing about with Christmas cards,  tailplane /elevator and fin just held on by masking tape to see how she looks.   Those 3" wheels don't half look big though.

Matador

Prior to starting the wings I'd been moaning about the table I build on not being perfectly flat and a fellow aeromodeller said thats why he builds on glass.   Now this was new to me and I thought it could be a real pain but since the 10mm plate glass was supplied free I thought give it a go.   Its a case of using wedges stuck on the glass with superglue and weights.   The wedges and glue removed later with one of those paint scraper things you use round windows.   I'll report how it goes later but here's the first photos.   Note weights removed from TE just for photo,  it doesn't look like some ribs are flat to the glass but they are and it is strange looking through 10mm of glass onto the plan.

Matador Matador

Well just got a bit of sanding to do on the wing tip and thats one half of the wing done,  building on glass wasn't the pain I expected and it is flat.   I decided to go with a preformed L.E and the center section will be sheeted top and bottom.

Matador wing

Not done much more other than start the other wing half,  I did however decide to weigh everything.   Existing wing half x 2,  servos,  snakes,  lipo,  fuselage,  tailplane with fin and 4 packs of litespan including the backing in total 24 ozs or 681 gms given that it should only take 3 sheets of litespan I think the 145w motor should be ok.   The only question is its only pulling 109 watts on a 8x4 ACPE prop with the Turnigy 1300mah 3s lipo,  should I try a 9x4.7 ACPE ? advice would be welcome.

Sharkface

I built one of these in the 1960's,  yes I'm an old git but couldn't resist another for £5 of wood a bit of covering and with a new cox shure start engine from
Dens Model Supplies  you can't go wrong.

Sharkface Sharkface

Sharkface  no not me the model,  it looks windy but my hair is rather thin these days it was about 8mph and the Sure Start was certainly powerful enough considering I tend to build heavy,  block balsa in the nose as per plan but then 1/16" ply on the bottom going back to where the wing finishes.   There are only 3 internal formers and the fuselage was brush painted with flair spectrum light blue and the wings and tailplane were covered with some scrap yellow solartex I had.   The down thrust gave the lads at the field a giggle but it was per plan and it needs it,  take her up in large circles and you're ok she's perfectly balanced with the Sure Start and the glide is long (more circling to loose height), she can really climb.  I used 9gm Turnigy servo's mounted on balsa rails and the battery flat pack is 4AAA cells 850ma, the receiver (Futaba 2.4ghz Fs617) is velcro'd on top.   I didn't bother mounting the on-off switch in case the exhaust went down both sides of the model and shorted the switch but this wasn't the case so I've mounted one on the side.   The tank was an old 10cc keilkraft job.   The fuel was Model Technics Gx16 which is 16% expert mix whatever that is and 20% castor, I'm still unsure about synthetic with these little high revving engines and although some people moan about castor gumming up, the gumming up also guarantees a good life time compression seal.

The Ben Buckle Mini Super

After having a browse on the net and looking at an old Keilkraft catalogue I fancied something like a Super 60 but a little smaller to fit in the car along with my Silhouette.   It was then I came across Ben Buckles plan of the Mini Super a 45" span model similar to the Super 60,  now complete she flies well
